Sensory Toy Playset

Date: 2023

Growing up with a family member with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), I would often go along to the occupational therapy sessions at the Child Development Center. I drew inspiration from the sensory toys and equipment to see how I could create something that would aid with self-regulation at home.

Sensory toys are very important for children with SPD as they help them process sensory information. They work to both calm the child when they are overstimulated as well as stimulate their senses when they are under stimulated. They also help develop and sharpen the child’s skills.

For this project, I designed and created a sensory toy playset meant to stimulate the child’s senses in a fun and exciting way at home. I started by researching Sensory Processing Disorder and the toys that are most effective. Then, I sketched a variety of designs for a multi-tiered playset, finalized my design using MDF wood, and manufactured the final product using a CNC laser with the assistance of a carpenter.
