When I was kayaking one day in Aqaba, Jordan, I could see beneath me a dead reef with bleached corals. I went to the local marine center and asked about what had happened. They told me about how climate change and pollution were affecting the marine ecosystem. Being passionate about corals and the environment, I began the process of conducting research to see how I could counteract these effects.
Inspired by similar projects that marine biologists were pursuing worldwide, I decided to embark upon a coral rehabilitation and transplantation project of my own in Aqaba. I started by collecting fragments of damaged coral and created a coral nursery, allowing them to grow and regenerate. After a few months, I transplanted the corals onto specially constructed concrete balls to create coral balls. These coral balls are safe in a lagoon, and I consistently measure and monitor their progress.
My project combines marine biology, engineering, and conservation to address a critical issue affecting our planet's coral reefs.
